Makanyi is located in the Timbavati, which has been dubbed as “The Place Where Something Sacred Came Down to Earth”. Indeed, Makanyi Lodge itself is a heavenly place and, what’s more, it couldn’t be better located. The Timbavati is an area of prime game viewing, home to the “Big Five” as well as the infamous, albeit elusive, White Lions.
Just seven luxury suites make Makanyi Private Game Lodge an excellent choice for guests seeking exclusivity in one of Africa’s most prolific game viewing destinations.
Overlooking a permanent waterhole with traversing rights to over 8000 hectares of private concessions the lodge prides itself on not only giving guests a very private safari experience, but also on its homely atmosphere with welcoming staff, superb cuisine and the utmost attention to detail.

Throughout your stay, your comfort and pleasure are top priorities, which is why they strive to ensure that every detail is just right, both indoors and outdoors. From every aspect of your suite, to your food and drinks and your game drives, at Makanyi, quality and service are the watchwords.
Every one of Makanyi’s seven luxury suites (145 sqm) overlooks the magnificent dam and comes with an extra large bed, a relaxing sitting area with its own fireplace, a beautiful bathroom with a spacious shower and separate bathtub, a private deck with loungers and an outdoor shower. Premium Africology amenities, complimentary Wi-Fi, telephone, hair dryer, mini bar, and a Nespresso coffee machine and tea making facilities are found in every room.
Luxury Pool Suites
Two of the seven rooms are luxury pool suite. As they are located furthest from the main lodge they offer more privacy, as well as a romantic four-poster bed and a wonderful private plunge pool on the deck – ideal for a soak with a glass of champagne, under a blanket of stars.
The Main Lodge is a perfect haven where you will find a superbly situated deck with stunning views of the dam, allowing you to unwind and watch amazing wildlife scenes unfold before your eyes. It is a lovely area to either relax on your own and take in the beauty of your surroundings, or to socialise with others and share stories about your sightings.
The sun loungers around the pool are perfect for sunbathing, reading or dozing, whilst our cozy loft serves as a quiet reading area or lounge to enjoy TV or a movie. In the main area, there are large, comfortable sofas by the roaring fireplace to keep you warm on a chilly evening, whereas on a warm summer’s night, nothing beats sitting on the deck by the pool sipping a refreshing cocktail to the sounds of lions roaring nearby. Alternatively, mingle with other guests at the bar where the barman is ready to prepare you your favourite drink, and share stories of your day’s sightings.
Tantalizing cuisine tastes even better when enjoyed in a stunning setting. Imagine breakfast on the deck sipping your coffee and surrounded by the many different songs of birds, often watched by a curious wildebeest or a rhino passing by. A light lunch by the pool is almost always in the company of a herd of impalas and the cutest vervet monkeys… High tea is always something to look forward to, with a choice of hot or cold drinks and decadent treats. Dinner is a wonderful experience, be it in our beautiful dining room or under the sparkling African sky sitting around the fire in the boma.
Experienced guides and trackers are always ready with a wealth of information on wildlife and all aspects of fauna and flora. Two daily Game drives provide the ideal opportunity to track down the “Big Five” and more. In fact, this is the only place in the world where the famous Timbavati White Lions can be seen in their natural habitat.
In addition to the exciting game drives, there are plenty of other activities to indulge in, from guided bush walks with your ranger, to fishing in one of the many dams in the company of hippos, to stargazing at night. For extra wellbeing there is a well-equipped gym, a pool to cool down in during the hottest hours of the day and a hot tub to soak in in the cooler evening temperatures. You can also enjoy a spa treatment in the privacy of your room or in the peaceful massage area.
To summarize all activities:
- Two daily game drives
- Bush walks
- Lodge Pool
- Curio shop
Whilst all of the guides at Makanyi are very proficient photographers in their own right and excellent at teaching guests the best ways to make the most of their camera equipment, there are many guests who wish to take their photography to the next level. For this we recommend a Private Photographic Safari. They are designed for guests who are looking for the full attention of the photographic tutor to maximize their learning and photographic skills in the number of days that have been allocated. This is open to and suitable for all levels of photographers, be it first time users or more advanced. It consists of one to one training or group (max 4 people) and the photographic tutor not only teaches and coaches the client but fulfills the role of a private guide as well. Included in private photographic tuition is the use of a private vehicle which enables you to have maximum flexibility for your wishes and convenience. The vehicle is designed to accommodate all the lenses and photographic equipment, including supports and bean bags.
Wildlife artist Warren Cary has teamed up with Makanyi Private Game Lodge to offer 4-day art workshops. Tuition takes place in the field: on game drives into the bush where the artists are taught to observe their surroundings and draw the animals in situ. Photo opportunities abound for those who wish to collect references of the wildlife.
There is a full program each day where the artists will draw different subject matter, but there will also be time to relax and experience the luxurious amenities at the lodge. For more information and prices please use the enquiry form to get in contact with one of our consultants.
